A CENTRAL ASIAN POTTERY DISH, PROBABLY KOKAND, UZBEKISTAN, 19TH CENTURY

of shallow form, painted in cobalt, with green, turquoise and manganese on white slip ground, decorated with in intricate floral star around a central Yuan style lotus medallion, the lip with a band of repeated rhombus motifs, the exterior with abstract splash decoration, 6cm high; 32.5cm diam.

Ceramics of this type, mostly painted in cobalt blue combined with other colours such as green and purple were produced in a number of centres in what is now Uzbekistan from the end of the 18th century onwards. This dish is closely related to an example in the Victoria and Albert Museum which is thought to be from Kokand, near Ferghana in the east of the country. (C.137-1909)
