Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner
El Sharq, the eldest son of the village butcher from the small village of Zawyet Sultan in El Minya, was self-taught and began painting as a boy using palm fibres, his father’s wrapping paper, and paints he made himself from spices bought at the local shop. His work portrays everyday life in southern Egypt and is recognised for its vivid colours.
German art critic Ursula Schernig discovered his work and arranged two exhibitions, one in Cairo and the other in Europe where all forty paintings were promptly sold. His works have subsequently been showcased in Egypt, Kuwait, Palestine, and Lebanon; the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, Italy, and the Netherlands.
