VICTORIAN GOLD PROSPECTOR'S BROOCH, 1880s

designed as a shovel stamped South Africa, with pick axe and bucket, accented with gold nuggets, stamped 9ct to reverse, 5 grams.

Novelty gold mining jewellery became popular during the South African Gold Rush of the 1880s, often depicting an assortment of mining tools such as shovel, pick axes and pans, they were mostly embelished with actual gold nuggets as a token of luck and sentiment.
