Misheck Makaza and Uparty Majengwa are Zimbabwean sculptors working in the tradition of Shona stone carving, one of the most internationally celebrated artistic movements to emerge from Africa in the post-independence period. The Shona sculpture movement, which gained significant international recognition from the 1960s onwards following the work of artists associated with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and the workshop of sculptor Tom Blomefield, draws on indigenous beliefs concerning ancestors, spirits and the natural world, translated into abstract and figurative forms in serpentine, springstone and other local stones. The four works offered here, carved in white serpentine, encompass female subjects and archetypal figures treated with a directness and tactile sensitivity that is characteristic of the best work in this tradition.
