Wisdom Edinam "Wiz" Kudowor is widely regarded as one of Ghana's most distinguished contemporary visual artists. He studied at the College of Art at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, graduating with a first-class honours degree in Fine Art in 1981. Kudowor's instantly recognisable style, built up with a foam roller and palette knife in strongly coloured, heavily layered compositions, synthesises Cubist and Futurist formal language with ancient Ghanaian aesthetic traditions, Akan symbols and cultural motifs. Described by critics as a "transcultural visionary", his work simultaneously draws on his cultural identity and reaches beyond them in a restless search for universal subject matter. His public commissions include a relief mural at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra. Works by Kudowor are held in prominent international collections, including those of Ghana's National Museum, China's Ministry of Culture, and Japan's Osaka Prefecture Contemporary Art Collection.
