Boris Anjé Tabufor, known as Anjel, is part of a new generation of Cameroonian painters whose work explores the intersection of identity, aspiration, and global consumer culture. A graduate of the Institut des Beaux-Arts de Foumban, Anjel lives and works in Douala, drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of urban youth and the visual codes of luxury branding.
In Fon (2018), a young man is surrounded by garments and logos that both define and constrain him. Executed in acrylic and Posca paint, the composition reflects the artist’s crisp graphic sensibility and his dialogue with the visual language of fashion imagery. Beneath the surface allure lies a nuanced critique of material aspiration and the politics of self-presentation in contemporary African society: an interrogation of the performance and consumption of identity in the global age.
