A SET OF EIGHTEEN ROYAL DOULTON 'GIBSON GIRL' SERIESWARE PLATES, CIRCA 1902-15

each with blue and white stylised foliate ground reserving a square panel printed in black with differing illustrations after Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) describing the episodes in the life of an attractive widow, titled as follows: 'Some think she has remained in retirement too long. Others are suprised that she is about so soon.' (1900); 'Miss Babbles the authoress calls and reads aloud.' (1900); 'She contemplates the cloister.' (1900); 'A message from the outside world.' (1900); 'And here, winning new friends and not losing the old ones, we leave her.' (1901); 'Miss Diggs is alarmed at discovering what she imagines to be a snare that threatens the safety of her only child. Mr Diggs does not share his wife's anxiety. (1900); 'A quiet dinner with Dr Bottles; after which he reads Miss Babble's latest work. (1900); 'The day after arriving at her journey's end.' (1901); 'She becomes a trained nurse.' (1901); 'She finds some consolation in her mirror.' (1900); 'She looks for relief among some of the old ones.' (1900); 'They take a morning run.' (1901); 'She decides to die in spite of Dr Bottles.' (1900); 'She is disturbed by a vision which appears to be herself.' (1901); 'Mrs Babbles brings a copy of a morning paper, and expresses her indignation and sympathy over a scurrilous article. Meanwhile other friends are calling upon the editor.' (1901); 'She finds that exercise does not improve her spirits.' (1900); 'She goes to the fancy dress ball as "Juliet".' (1901); 'They all go skating.' (1901), impressed Doulton Burslem roundels and printed Royal Doulton marks, 26.5cm diameter; together with a signed copy of 'The Langhorne Sisters', by James Fox, London, 1998, with cloth covers and dust jacket (19)

Provenance: Charles Dana Gibson, given by him to his niece by marriage, Hon. Dinah Brand (1920-1998) on the occasion of her marriage to Commander Lyttleton Fox, 6 March 1943; thence to her son, the vendor, James Fox (b.1945).

One of the Langhorne sisters, Gibson's wife Irene is thought to have inspired his character The Gibson Girl, who came to epitomise contemporary American ideals of feminine spirit and beauty.
