a French bronzed lead uniface cliché medallion, Paris, early 19th century, bust in profile to dexter, inscribed 'ANDRIEU F.' to truncation, 14cm diameter, mounted in a deeply dished and turned wood frame of 27.5cm diameter
The famous medallist Andrieu is known to have had a shop in Paris, which sold clichés from his dies. Produced in a machine apparently called a 'clichoir', usually in bronzed lead, these clichés, given their size and material, were presumably always intended for mounting.
