AN AUSTRIAN PALLASCH, CIRCA 1700

with broad blade fullered on both sides of the forte, one side etched with a crowned double-headed eagle above the inscription ‘Die Turken thyen mit Schwedt und Brandt Das Gontze Land ver heeren’, a martial trophy below and on the other with a coat-of-arms above ‘drom heff Vns Gott mit Starker handt Sicht huer zu Erwehren’, a martial trophy below, hilt of flattened bars comprising up-bent knuckle-guard and straight rear quillon, vertical langets extending into the cord-bound leather-covered grip, the latter with copper alloy washer on both sides and iron pommel-cap (some old rust patination), 81.5 cm blade

The evolution of weapon design during this period saw the emergence of distinct patterns and regulated models, driven by the changing requirements of the battlefield and, in turn, advances in manufacture.
