A VICTORIAN SILVER TANKARD JUG, MARTIN, HALL & CO., SHEFFIELD, 1859

baluster, richly chased all over with scrolls and foliage around a cartouche with slightly later engraved monogram DJC, spreading foot and domed lid, gilt interior, 20.5cm high, 665g including ivory insulators to scroll handle

Provenance: Professor Daniel John Cunningham (1850-1909) and Mrs Cunningham (1851-1929); thence by family descent to the vendors.

This piece may have started life as a plain Georgian baluster tankard, the original marks perhaps removed when it was refashioned and subsequently sent for re-assay by Martin, Hall & Co. in 1859. See another Martin, Hall & Co. tankard jug apparently with George II marks to base and Sheffield 1856 marks to lid, Anderson & Garland, Newcastle, 8 December 2000, lot 1785 and another where there appear to be older marks under the marks to the base for Martin, Hall & Co., 1860, Adam's, Dublin, 28 August 2024, lot 185.
